Have you ever considered the cost of working in a coffee shop vs. a shared workspace?

While you can work from almost anywhere as an individual or freelancer, not all work environments are created equal! Even though working from home can be beneficial at times, for some, it's not generally sustainable in the long-term. In fact some find it can be isolating, too distracting, or that it can stifle their creative juices; not to mention the stress when there is loadshedding and the Wifi goes down and the distinction between work and home-life becomes blurred.

Luckily, for individuals who don’t want to work from home every day, but want a flexible, productive and affordable space to work, there are other options available, from your local coffee shop, to a flexible work space, like that offered by OFFICE Co.

Although coffee shops are convenient, have you ever considered the cost of working at one versus a flexible workspace?

If you work from a coffee shop, you’ll be expected, or feel obligated, to buy something at least every hour or two.

The average cost of a coffee at a favoured destination is for example is R30 and if you’re adding a snack, you’re already looking at closer to R100. If you’re staying for a full day, you’ll also need to factor in buying a light-lunch and with table service, you’ll be expected to add a tip on top.

A short 6-hour working day at a coffee shop can cost you:

1 coffee when you arrive, and refill every 2 hours = 4 x R30 = R120.

Snack or light-lunch: = R 60.

Tip: = R 18.

Approx. total daily cost: = R198.

Parking charges may well increase this amount, as will the cost of entertaining a colleague or client. Availability of a suitable table to conduct your business can also result in wasted time.

ALTERNATIVELY:

The DAILY cost (no contract) of a shared workspace at OFFICE CO. is presently R160 ex vat.

This entitles you to a variety of comfortable air-conditioned workspaces to suit your working style, served by high-speed Wifi, free coffee or tea and access to meeting facilities, scanning & printing and reception services. Back-up power means that you’re always able to work. Free car parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis and you can even bring your own snacks & lunch.

SO, WHAT’S THE CONCLUSION?

While coffee shops might seem cheaper at first, if you spend a similar amount, or more daily over a long period of time, it can really add up. Additionally, working at a coffee shop doesn't always guarantee a table of your choice and it's definitely not the best place to host a meeting or video call, not to mention the noise and distractions impacting your concentration.
